Biography

Andrea Wallace examines the impact of digital technologies on the preservation, interpretation and dissemination of cultural heritage as well as the obstacles and opportunities presented by the digital realm. She is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Exeter.

She co-curated a research-led experimental exhibition, Display At Your Own Risk (2016), which featured digital surrogates of public domain works made available online by cultural institutions. Her work was also included in the group exhibition No Copyright Infringement Intended at Phoenix, Leicester, and Vivid Projects, Birmingham, UK (2017).

In 2017, she launched Copyright Cortex (with Ronan Deazley and Victoria Stobo), an online resource dedicated to copyright and digital cultural heritage, which provides cultural heritage institutions and organisations with scholarly commentary, practical guidance and real-world case studies.

Wallace frequently writes and presents on open culture and the impact that a claim to copyright in reproductions has on meaningful access to—and reuse of—cultural heritage in the public domain. Her publications include a case study, Mona Lisa, in A History of Intellectual Property in 50 Objects (Cambridge University Press, 2019); the paper Accessibility and Open GLAM in International Perspectives on Disability Exceptions in Copyright Law and the Visual Arts (Routledge, 2020); and Revisiting Access to Cultural Heritage in the Public Domain: EU and International Developments (IIC International Review of Intellectual Property and Competition Law, 2020).

Wallace holds a BFA with an emphasis on Visual Communication from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2006). She earned her PhD in Cultural Heritage Law at CREATe, University of Glasgow in partnership with the National Library of Scotland, focusing on the intersections of copyright, cultural institutions and the public domain. She also holds a Master’s degree in European Business Law from Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands (2014) and Doctorate of Law from DePaul University College of Law and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2014).

Born in 1984 in the United States, she lives and works in Exeter, UK.
