Biography

Werner Hasler is a composer, trumpet player and electronic musician. Besides his long-time collaboration with Kamilya Jubran, he runs the outer string, a loose formation of cello, trumpet, electronics and drums, and recent work includes hybrids of exhibition/installation and live performances. His last work, OUT TOO, is a looped audiovisual installation followed by a live set of around 60 minutes, all accompanied by an exhibition of ten pictures titled out in the woods. The work premiered at Orbital Garden, Bern (2018) and has toured in different forms. OUT TOO was released in collaboration with Carlo Niederhauser (cello), Hugo Ryser (visuals) and the Optickle crew, Orbital Garden and Perron3. OUT and OUT TOO were released on Everest Records. In addition to his work as a composer and performer, Hasler lectures on electronics and music at Hochschule der Künste, Bern.

Since 2002, Hasler has collaborated with Kamilya Jubran on a number of experimental music projects. Their first collaboration, Mahattaat (2002), was an experiment with different cultural and artistic roots, but their worlds intermingled. Their next collaboration, Wameedd (2004), combined Jubran’s vocal skill and imagination with Hasler’s melodies and talent in a unique alchemy. The duo also released Wanabni (2010) and Wasl (2016), featuring the double bass player Sarah Murcia. Other works by Hasler include The Outer String, with Katryn Hasler, Carlo Niederhauser, Vincent Courtois and Christoph Steiner (2012); Hasler / Paeffgen / Berger, with Karl Berger and Gilbert Paeffgen (2012) and flambitres, with Oliver ‘Oli‘ Kuster, Urban Lienert and Dominik Burkhalter (2007).

Until 1996, Hasler studied music at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern, Switzerland, where Bert Joris was his trumpet instructor. He started working with electronic music during his studies there, but he is self-taught in this discipline as there were no courses available to him at the time.

He was born in 1969 in Bern, where he continues to live and work.
