Biography

Jun Yang completed his studies at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna after having studied in Amsterdam at the Gerrit Rietveld Akademie’s free media department.

Having grown up in various cultural contexts, Yang’s work often addresses cities as mediated environments and the constructed experiences and memories they imply. The Artist produced a trilogy of films from 2007 to 2010 that reflect on how the memories of individuals, as well as those of cities, long to be different, reinvent themselves and move on. These three short films were filmed in three different countries: A short story on forgetting and remembering (2007) in Taiwan; Norwegian Woods (2008), Lofoten Islands, Norway and Seoul Fiction (2010) in the Republic of Korea.

Yang has also developed projects that investigate how public spaces function and the type of elements that operate within them. These include creating a public space within an art fair, transforming the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig museum shop into a place where visitors could buy a snack or a Superflex Guarana soft drink, or designing a fully functioning hotel room, Hotel Paris Syndrom. Most recently Yang has been involved in Scenarios about Europe, a project gathering together several institutions and contributors to question how to realise an art exhibition with Europe as its theme and how this could be presented in nine cities, within the European Union and beyond.

Solo exhibitions of Yang’s work include Taishin Project: Seoul Fiction, an Installation for a Public Space, Taishin Bank Foundation for Arts and Culture, Taipei (2011); A Short-Story On Forgetting And Remembering, ShugoArts, Tokyo (2010) and Paris Syndrome, Vitamin Creative Space, Guangzhou (2008).

Recent group shows include City within the City, Artsonje Center, Seoul (2011); 2010 Cinema, Vitamin Creative Space, Guangzhou (2010); Projected Image, Platform Seoul 2010, Seoul (2010) and Taipei Contemporary Art Center Tokyo Branch, 3331 Arts Chiyoda, Tokyo (2010). Yang has participated in the Gwangju Biennale (2012); Taipei Biennial (2008); International 06, Liverpool Biennial, UK (2006) and Venice Biennale (2005).
