Biography
The work of painter Fathallah Zamroud is characterised by his expressive brushwork and dramatic use of colour. With a critical perception of space informed by his study of architecture, he bases many of his paintings on his own photographs of abandoned structures and ravaged landscapes in Syria and other war-torn areas.
Zamroud received a degree in interior architecture from the Lebanese American University, Beirut, where he also studied fine arts. After graduation, he continued his art training for seven years in the atelier of painter Louna Maalouf. There he learned formal painting techniques and experimented with a variety of drawing and painting mediums. He also developed a strong interest in the painting style of the German expressionists.
In addition to painting, Zamroud has participated actively in the artistic community, serving as a board member of MASSYR, a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting Middle Eastern art and artists. He is also head jewellery designer at ETS Zamroud, Beirut.
His work has been shown in group exhibitions at Sharjah Biennial 13: Tamawuj and Material Remains, Ayyam Gallery, Beirut (2014).
Zamroud was born in 1968 in Beirut, where he lived and worked until his death in 2018.
