Biography

Fahrelnissa Zeid’s practice is marked by her monumental abstract works, from the late 1940s–1960s, influenced by stained glass and mosaic design, at once conglomeration and defiance of geometric and perspectival logic.
Zeid’s work has been shown in exhibitions in Europe, the United States and the Middle East including Fahrelnissa Zeid Centennial, Darat al Funun, Amman (2001); Trois Femmes Peintres, Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris (1990); 9000 years of art of the Kingdom of Jordan, Musee du Luxembourg, Paris (1986) and Leighton House, London (1958).
Retrospectives of her work were shown in Istanbul Modern (2006); Hall of Cemal Resit Rey, Istanbul (1994) and the Royal Cultural Center, Amman, Jordan (1983).
Zeid was born in Istanbul in 1901. She was educated at Notre Dame de Sion d’Istanbul and was one of the first women to attend the Fine Arts Academy in Istanbul. She later studied at the Académie Ranson in Paris. She died in September 1991 in Amman.
