Zeina Maasri

Biography

Zeina Maasri is Senior Lecturer in History of Art at the University of Bristol. She works across the fields of art and design history, specialising in the visual and cultural politics of the postcolonial Arab world and in the broader historical conditions of modernity and (post)coloniality in the Global South.

She is the author of the award-winning book Cosmopolitan Radicalism: The Visual Politics of Beirut’s Global Sixties (Cambridge University Press, 2020) and Off the Wall: Political Posters of the Lebanese Civil War (IB Tauris, 2009), which served as the foundation for a related travelling exhibition and online archival resource, Signs of Conflict. She co-edited Transnational Solidarity: Anticolonialism in the Global Sixties (Manchester University Press, 2022) and Mapping Sitting: On Portraiture and Photography (2002). She was formerly an independent graphic designer and an academic at the American University of Beirut (1999–2016).

Maasri is the recipient of a Fellowship from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), UK (2022-24) and is an elected fellow of the Royal Historical Society (2021).

Born in 1973 in Beirut, she currently lives and works between Brighton, Bristol and Beirut.
