Artist Statement
Domes appear as an element in architecture throughout the world. The oldest domes still in existence have been dated back to the ancient Near East, but there is evidence that they were constructed even earlier. Although they have been used for a wide range of buildings, today domes are closely associated with religious structures.
The seventh-century Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem is the oldest surviving Islamic building. Sharjah is known for its Islamic architecture, reflecting the emphasis that this emirate has placed on preservation, as opposed to Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
I am fascinated by spherical and cylindrical elements: the planets and their orbits; our circumambulation of the Kaaba. Circumvolution is a key component of this project, which uses traditional metal fish traps, known as gargour, to create a basic dome structure. This work explores new possibilities for collaborations between artists and artisans, preserving elements of regional culture.
