Excavators

Overview

In contrast to the large scale of Shadow Sites I and II, Excavators is shown on a tiny monitor and focuses on a group of industrious ants working in the sand. The film draws attention to an activity in the landscape that could easily be overlooked and the results of which are hard to comprehend. The shifts in scale from long-distance shot to close-up, from large to very small, recall video footage shot by fighter pilots in action, effectively reducing those on the ground to an insect scale and allowing the pilots to dehumanise their targets.
