Overview
Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige's practice includes feature films, documentaries and short films as well as photographic and video installations. Grounded in the context of their native Lebanon and events that are close to their personal lives, their works reflect the artists' ongoing interrogation of imagery, representation and history.
ISMYRNE (2016) is a film that documents a lengthy encounter between Joana Hadjithomas and the artist and poet Etel Adnan. Friends since the early 1990s, they grew close, bound by links to their ancestral homeland of Smyrna (now known as Izmir), a city that they never visited. Families of both Hadjithomas and Adnan were forced into exile from Smyrna after the Ottoman Empire's fall. In turn, they inhabited an imaginary Smyrna, which they unfold together through an illustrated conversation.
