Overview
Marianne Fahmy’s films explore the relationship between natural phenomena and human habitation and its role in structuring reality and the invention of the future. Her short films Magic carpet land (2020) and What things may come (2019) present paradoxical dynamics and environments such as the sea and the desert, entities existing largely outside of human influence while still having deep entanglements with expansion and nationalism. Drawing from found archives, historical mythologies and interviews with families of oceanographers, Fahmy explores the changing topography of Egypt and showcases new, speculative oceanographic futures.
