Overview

Drawing from a lifetime of complex entanglements with the physical and emotional legacies of the Vietnam War, Pipo Nguyen-duy’s photography is influenced by traditional landscape painting and theatrical composition. (My) East of Eden (2011–2013) is the third and final chapter of his staged narrative photography series ‘East of Eden’ (2002–2013) which began as an attempt to render post-9/11 America through a post- apocalyptic lens. The third chapter, reminiscent of nineteenth century British landscape paintings implying harmony between the environment and its inhabitants, centres the resilience and strength of humanity against the backdrop of this once- scarred landscape.
