Overview
Drawing on Easterling’s book Extrastatecraft (2014), A.S.T. collectively examines how ‘infrastructure sets the invisible rules that govern the space of everyday lives.’ With no single, identifiable force to oppose, the initiative’s work Noise (back-broadcast through the persistent illusion) (2017) takes an interest in unexplored conceptions of agency, resistance and temporality that could evolve from leveraging existing networks, forces, ruptures and flows already in play.
This conceptual exploration takes the form of a multichannel video installation that incorporates animation work by artist Keith Tillford, planetary scientist Pasquale Tricarico and engineer Andrew Wong. The project also includes the website astronaut.io, designed by Wong with James Thompson and featuring sound by musician Jake Meginsky.
This project was part of Sharjah Biennial 13.
