Overview
Obaid Suroor’s mixed media practice draws from natural landscapes and traditional architecture of the Emirates. Postcolonial (2022) is a three-part painting across six canvases arising from childhood memories of his native Ras Al Khaimah, under the thumb of British colonialism prior to the unification of the Emirates. Also on display is a suite of landscape and built heritage paintings that survey and interweave the evolution of his practice, including his surrealist paintings of the early 1990s, his polka dot series using traditional Emirati fabrics as a canvas to paint the Northern and Eastern Emirates’ main heritage buildings and mixed media canvases which incorporate seashells and corals from the coastline.
