Overview
Exploring formalism, gender identity and autobiography, Prem Sahib’s abstract sculptures, installations and paintings are minimalist, with an affinity for simple geometry. In his recent work, Sahib has experimented with reflections of colour and relief.
Liquid Gold (2016–ongoing) emerged from the artist’s ongoing exploration into the materiality of codified relationships inherent within colour, form and spatial contexts. The flooding of a space with the colour yellow connects with bodily substance, with gold as material and symbol. It’s title also touches upon the texture and aura of substances that can transcend or move in an amorphous way through a space, pointing to a re-imagining of fixed forms and solid states. Sahib wields the physicality of light as an entity that can fill a space sculpturally. The positioning of viewers outside of the space itself invites commentary on access, the imagined inclusion of basking in this yellow light with its allusions to glory, power, transcendence and spirituality.
