Overview
Saule Suleimenova uses painting, photography, performance art and installation to navigate traditional Kazakh culture and the aesthetics of revolt by employing a wide range of media such as wax, plastic bags, scrap metal and cellophane.
Featured in Unsettled Objects are three artworks from the artist’s ‘Residual Memory’ series, Immigrants in 1930s; Asharshylyk. Survived Children; and Karlag. Everyone Feels Well (2018). These works seek to reflect on the historical trauma experienced by displaced communities in her homeland and form part of a constitutive effort to salvage a history that has been rarely documented. Existing between reality and imagination, the past and the present, these artworks serve as testimony, archive and monument.
