Shadow Stalker (2019)

Overview

Artist and filmmaker Lynn Hershman Leeson explores relationships between people, technology, surveillance, identity and media and the role these relationships play in the struggle against censorship. She deconstructs and revisits traditional thoughts on time and space and examines the social and political issues arising from the interference of media in human lives. She is a global pioneer of video and interaction art.

Shadow Stalker (2019) is an interactive installation that uses algorithms, performance and projections to draw attention to internet systems used by law enforcement (e.g. Predictive Policing) that promote racial profiling. Art in the Age of Anxiety presents the video component of the project, featuring Tessa Thompson and January Steward as ‘The Spirit of the Deep Web’. The project outlines the history of Predictive Policing and highlights the dangers of digital identity theft and data mining. Created with scientists and engineers, Shadow Stalker is a commentary on the rapid evolvement of technology and calls for the protection of individual rights in a time of excessive surveillance and misuse of data.
