Overview

Lani Maestro’s Tulalá is an installation of two large table structures, which effectively function as two glass-topped vitrines. Each vitrine is packed with a number of open books with their pages splayed to show compositions of fluid, wistful marks and delicate, indecipherable handwriting. The marks appear to be traces of smoke that have brushed the pages.

Tulalá places two forms and rhythms in playful opposition: The books in each vitrine form a surface that recalls the ripple and curve of an endless expansive ocean, while the sculptural tables contain the illusion within their delineating architectural form. It is a work that confronts the fleeting and ephemeral with the rigid and material.
