Overview

Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige’s collaborative projects range from investigating disappearances during the Lebanese Civil War to rediscovering a forgotten space project from the 1960s to giving materiality to internet scams and examining the geological undergrounds of cities. Under the Cold River Bed (2021), the eighth part of their series ‘Unconformities’ (2016–ongoing), is an installation that uncovers the history of Nahr el Bared, a camp in northern Lebanon built in 1948 to house Palestinian refugees. The artists present this history as a sculpture that echoes the multilayered geotextile of the site. Accompanying projections of select photographs and documents narrate the site’s non-linear human, archaeological and military histories, in a place of geopolitical madness.
