We Should Go Together

Overview

At Sharjah Biennial 9 Ana Vidigal exhibited a series of ten collages, each of which were made using large-scale copies of labyrinth or maze puzzles found in newspapers and magazines. Vidigal works on top of these found patterns using a range of media, including acrylic paint and the written word.

The series is a reflection on the desire to divert or ‘kill’ time, which is something of an unnecessary inclination we insist on indulging. Not knowing how to use time when nothing is required of us can lead to exercises in false concentration, such as trying to solve magazine puzzles. In 2007 Vidigal spent a great amount of time in a hospital waiting room and would glance through magazines – a way of killing time and somewhat of a strategy for survival.

Intrigued by the formal elements of the puzzles as well as the lines that had been traced onto the page by previous readers, she began to collect cuttings from the magazines. She returns to her collection of cuttings to find material for new works. In We Should Go Together, Vidigal blows up a selection of these puzzles to vastly exaggerated proportions, which seem to capture the immensity of passing time.
