This guide covers the exhibition Lala Rukh: In the Round, the largest survey of the artist’s work to date. The exhibition encompasses a wide spectrum of Lala Rukh’s practice, from her signature drawings and prints to her lesser-known early works, video art and photography.
The exhibition also includes an archival section, which pays homage to her feminism, pedagogy and musical affiliations, offering glimpses into her life beyond the realm of art.
The exhibition was curated by Hoor Al Qasimi and Natasha Ginwala with Mahmoud El Safadi. The guide includes a foreword by Al Qasimi and commentary about the works and concept behind the exhibition.
The circumnavigation of a cultural practice as capacious as an ocean horizon, as fierce as a lone protest call, and as intimate as undulating contours of an evening raga is evidenced in the oeuvre of artist, activist and pedagogue Lala Rukh (1948-2017).
Join us for a talk organised in conjunction with the exhibition Lala Rukh: In the Round. Maryam Rahman (artist, The Estate of Lala Rukh), Sarah Zaman (singer and musicologist) and exhibition co-curator Natasha Ginwala together discuss the life and practice of artist, activist and pedagogue Lala Rukh (1948–2017).
Hoor Al Qasimi, President and Director of Sharjah Art Foundation, established the Foundation in 2009 as a catalyst and advocate for the arts in Sharjah, in the region and around the world.
Natasha Ginwala is a curator, researcher and writer.
Multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker Mahmoud Safadi examines notions of urbanism and its intersection with the natural world.
