Overview

Slanted Squares is published on the occasion of the presentation of the Bonnefanten Award for Contemporary Art, BACA 2019, to Marwan Rechmaoui and in conjunction with his solo exhibition of the same name at the Bonnefanten, Maastricht and Sharjah Art Foundation. Drawing on the complex geography and multicultural history of Beirut, Rechmaoui explores urban structures, mapping and behavioural demographics through sculptural aspects of form, volume, and material.

Slanted Squares gives a glimpse of the wide range of the artist’s practice over the last two decades through an intimate view into his studio and documentation of the rapidly changing landscape of Beirut alongside his artworks. This book is edited by Zeynep Öz, and includes a conversation between Rechmaoui and Akram Zaatari.
