The New Emirati Britannica, commissioned by Sharjah Art Foundation, is modeled on one of the most famous encyclopedias in modern history, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Eleventh Edition, published in 1911. In turn, this Emirati encyclopedia serves to represent and inform a country balancing its long association with the UK alongside its rapid development of a distinct global identity—both economic and cultural.
This supplement focuses on science and natural history and omits biography and Qur’anic scholarship. It chronicles artifacts such as 50 C, the Arabian Leopard, Food Safety, Houbara Bustard, Human Genetics, Kohl, Oral Health and the Salik Tag as visual and material cultural references of the UAE.
The Biennial will present new and specially commissioned works by contemporary Artists, Filmmakers, Writers and Performers from across the region and internationally.
The encyclopaedia is a monumental work of instruction, aiming to treat everything that can be learned by a person in his or her lifetime.
