Overview

Best known for his films and experimental animations, Robert Breer began his career as a painter and was an early member of the post-war Parisian school of abstraction, subscribing to Mondrian’s vision of an ideal pure form of abstract art with strict rules of composition. Shifting his focus in the 1950s he began to experiment with film, animation and movement. This exhibition reveals Breer’s playfulness through a wide range of media including paintings, drawings, sculptures and moving objects. Two of these moving objects were commissioned and recreated for this exhibition.
