This exhibition booklet is a record of Sharjapan: The Poetics of Space exhibition which highlights book design in Japan from the early twentieth century to the present through innovative exhibition methods, bringing together typography, page design and photographs combining text and images.
The exhibition, curated by Yuko Hasegawa, comprises of six broad sections, based on the individual nature and characteristics of the books on view: Books created in the 1930s and 1940s with unique materials; Photobooks; Books as satisfying objects; Books becoming art; Pre- and postwar magazine designs; Photobooks that become an exhibition space.
Sharjapan: The Poetics of Space will highlight book design in Japan through innovative exhibition methods, bringing together typography, page design and photographs combining text and images.
Yuko Hasegawa is the Artistic Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, and Professor in Curatorial Studies at the Graduate School of Global Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts.
