This publication features a candid interview of the artists conducted by Sharjah Art Foundation Director Hoor Al Qasimi, in which they reveal their creative emphasis on process, which encompasses two-dimensional artwork, installations, performances, photography and film. Their close emotional and professional attachment to the city of Beirut inspires, defines or informs every aspect of their projects. Through their work, the artists present complex histories rather than simplified official narratives, told through the everyday lives and issues of people. Two projects commissioned for this exhibition titled Remembering the Light (Se Souvenir de la Lumière) and ISMYRNA accompany previous projects including the Lebanese Rocket Society, Faces and the President’s Album. Interactive artworks such as the Circle of Confusion and the Postcards of War add to the engaging experience of this exhibition.
Grounded in the context of Beirut and events that are close to their personal lives, the works of Lebanese artists and filmmakers Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige reflect the artists' ongoing interrogation of imagery, representation and history.
A guide to the exhibition of the same title and a monograph of the artists’ work.
Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige question the fabrication of images and representations, the construction of imaginaries and the writing of history.
Khalil Joreige and Joana Hadjithomas collaborate as visual artists and filmmakers.
