Sharjah Art Foundation presents the Middle East debut of artist Andrew Stahl, running through 10 September 2019. A contemporary artist, and primarily a painter, Stahl’s work is concerned with both the consequences and possibilities resulting from globalisation and transcultural interaction.
Curated by Sharjah Art Foundation Director Hoor Al Qasimi, the exhibition Andrew Stahl: 1976-Today features a wide selection of the artist’s paintings dating from the 1970s and reveal a sculpture made in situ commissioned by the foundation. During the exhibition, Stahl also led a painting workshop that was open to children of all levels of ability.
Known largely for his large-scale figurative paintings, the artist has exhibited his work internationally, including at the Bangkok Art Biennale (2018–2019).

Also on view this summer at the foundation are two additional shows; the seventh edition of the annual photography exhibition Vantage Point Sharjah, which runs through 6 October 2019, and Surface Tension, a group exhibition exploring the notion of surface, on view through 7 September 2019.
About Andrew Stahl
Ranging from painting to sculpture, Andrew Stahl’s work explores the symbolic, the formal and the expressive whilst engaging notions of the transcultural. His paintings and sculptures are often simple structures and yet at close proximity embed smaller images, discoveries and details. Symbolic details within these paintings and sculptures do not necessarily reveal a narrative, they are a collection of flowing thoughts floating across the surfaces.
Stahl’s work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions, including Hot Summer by the Khlong, YenakArt Villa, Bangkok (2017); New Paintings, Robert Steele Gallery, New York (2010); Parasol, Matthew Bown Gallery London (2007); Two Weeks in Sydney: Paintings, College of Fine Arts, UNSW, Sydney (2004); and New Paintings and Drawings, Bangkok Mosaic, 100 Tonson Gallery, Bangkok (2003–2004), Chiang Mai Museum, Thailand (2001), Flowers Gallery, London (1998). His group exhibitions include Beyond Boundaries, Somerset House, London (2019); Only Connect, Creative Center Osaka (2019); Bangkok Art Biennale (2018–2019); Fully Awake, Dyson Gallery, RCA London (2018) and MD3 Fragility and Monumentality, Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre (2014).
Stahl’s work is in many collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Arts Council England; British Council; UK Government Art Collection and British Museum.
Stahl has received numerous awards, including UCL Global Engagement Award (2017, 2018, 2019); Wingate Scholarship for travelling to Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Burma (1991) Rome Award in Painting, British School at Rome (1990), and Abbey Major Rome Scholarship, British School at Rome (1979–1981). He completed residencies at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China (2007); Mahasarakharm University, Thailand (2005); University of New South Wales, Sydney (2004); Silpakorn University, Bangkok (2003), Chiang Mai University, Thailand (2000), Sri Lanka (1997).
Andrew Stahl is a Professor of Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL.
