Biography
Using a range of media including photography, film installation and participatory public performances, the artist experiments in her search for the most expressive possibilities for her work.
In her disturbing project for the 2009 Sharjah Biennial, Man to Man (2009), Agnes Janich created a multi-video installation where viewers were led through a maze of darkened passages to rooms that dead-ended with videos of relentlessly barking dogs restrained in prison-like cages.
Janich exhibits widely in Poland and has had major international solo shows including at MLAC, Rome (2010) and the Koli Artist-in-Residence Centre, Koli, Finland (2010). Her work has also been seen in exhibitions in Singapore, Indonesia, Berlin, London, in the Sharjah Biennial (2009), at the Galapagos Art Space, New York (2009), the Maison Européenne de la Photographie,Paris and the Central European House of Photography, Bratislava (2007).
Janich graduated from the European Academy of Photography in Warsaw followed by a BFA in Photography at the School of Visual Arts, New York (2008). She has received grants for residency projects across the USA and Europe, including the Altes Spital, Solothurn, Switzerland (2008), the Villa Straeuli, Winterthur, Switzerland and the Virginia Centre for the Creative Arts, USA (2007). She was also the 2008 recipient of the Artist's Residency and Artist's Grant at the Can Serrat International Art Centre in Spain (2008). Agnes Janich was born in Lodz, Poland in 1985, raised in Africa and the Far East and currently lives and works between Warsaw and New York.
