Biography
For the 9th Sharjah Biennial Karin Sander created Kugelbahn (Ball Valve, 2009), a site-specific installation where a shiny silver ball would follow a track along the ramp that leads through the Sharjah Art Museum exhibition spaces. Once at the bottom, the ball would wait until someone returned it to the top of the ramp to start its journey once again. Also on view was an earlier piece titled German National Women's Soccer Team (2005), a 3-D replication of the entire team and support staff of the German team as it was in 2005 in a scale of 1:7.
Sander's work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Switzerland (2010). She has been included in group exhibitions at K20 Grabbelplatz (Labor), Düsseldorf, Germany (2010), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2010), Museum Ludwig, Köln (2005), the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco (2001), the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2000), Sculpture Project, Münster (1997) and the Istanbul Biennial (1995). In 2009 she curated Zeigen: an Audio Tour through Berlin, at the Temporäre Kunsthalle, Berlin (2009-10) in which 566 Berlin-based artists presented acoustic renderings of normally visual works. Her work is included in important public collections including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
While on a DAAD scholarship, Karin Sander studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Stuttgart and the Independent Studio Program, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1989). She has been visiting professor at universities and institutions in Germany, New Zealand and Switzerland. Sander was born in 1957 in Bensberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and currently lives and works between Germany and New York.
