Overview

Rheim Alkadhi’s new commission, Communications From the Field of Contact (Each Hair is a Tongue) (2015), attempts to provide a framework by which to contemplate new cultural intimacies. By soliciting small pieces of peripheral vision – the eyelashes of sea labourers who work along Sharjah Creek – relationships were forged between strangers with a shared regard for the sea. Through this intimate exchange, the stranger-participants navigated unfixed identities in migrating moments. In her work Alkadhi asks, ‘Within this temporary field, how close can we get to seeing differently than before?’

This project was part of Sharjah Biennial 12
