Overview

This catalogue accompanied Sharjah Biennial 8, which attempted to renegotiate the relationship between art and ecology into a system of cohabitation. This idea was delineated in the catalogue through project descriptions and essays that questioned, and sometimes measured, the impact of human geography on the planet in economic, social, environmental and political terms.

The book begins with notes from Director Hoor Al Qasimi and Artistic Director Jack Persekian, followed by curatorial essays from Mohammad Kazem, Eva Scharrer and Jonathan Watkins. The next section contains essays responding to the theme of art and ecology and then project descriptions and photographic documentation of artworks that were part of the Biennial. Essay contributors include Hisham Al Madhloum, Mona El-Mousfy, Serene Huleileh, Munir Fasheh, Manish Jain, Francesco Manacorda, Akiko Miki, Trevor Smith and Raimar Stange.
