Make the most of your visit to Sharjah Biennial 13: Tamawuj by pairing it with one of our workshops, discussions, guided tours or film screenings taking place this Saturday, 22 April 2017.
In the two workshops for Children’s Open Day 7 from 10:00 am, children can learn how to make watercolours from natural pigments and how to grow vegetables from kitchen scraps such as carrot tops and onion bottoms. The workshop venue is Arts Square next to Bait Al Serkal, where works by ten SB13 artists are currently on view.
Also from 10:00 am, the Adult Education Programme is offering the workshop Architectural Photography at the Old Sharjah Planetarium, which will focus on the history and architecture of the planetarium while instructing participants in the skills required to archive and document an architectural icon. Workshop participants and other SB13 visitors can also see the work of SB13 artists Natascha Sadr Haghighian and Askhan Sepahvand titled Carbon Theatre, a four-channel sound installation with wall drawings and a free booklet that explores connections between astronomy, energy extraction and human perception.
Those aged 18 and over who want to experience the vibrant fish auction at Souq Al Jubail can join the Community and Outreach team and artist Rania Jishi on a day in the market to learn about gyotaku printing, a Japanese printing process that will be used to document the fish catches of the day. Excursion: Gyotaku Printing at the Fish Auction will begin at 2:00 pm.
At 8:30 pm, visitors can end the day with a screening of Bab’ Aziz: The Prince Who Contemplated His Soul at SAF’s open air Mirage City Cinema. The film recounts the journey of a blind dervish and his granddaughter Ishtar, who wander the desert in search of the great reunion of dervishes while the grandfather narrates the story of the prince Bab’Aziz.

Ranging from traditional homes to contemporary warehouses, the unique SB13 exhibition spaces are staffed with knowledgeable guides who are happy to take visitors on informative tours of the Biennial in English, Arabic and Urdu. Refreshments are available in the SAF spaces from the Fen Cafes and Restaurant, which offer a variety of homemade salads, sandwiches and desserts. Unique gifts items such as tote bags and notebooks featuring a print taken from Sharjah’s historic coral walls, SB13 guidebooks and other limited edition merchandise are offered at the SAF Shops, located in Al Mureijah Square and Arts Square.
For those who wish a tour of all six SB13 venues, including the exhibitions in the three heritage areas as well as the iconic Flying Saucer, the Old Sharjah Planetarium and the newly opened Al Hamriyah Studios on the Sharjah coast, SAF offers bus tours every Saturday.
